March 24 marks the one year anniversary of the downtown Cleveland stabbing of Beachwood resident Aliza Sherman.

Sherman was killed outside of 75 Erieview Plaza in downtown Cleveland around 5:30 p.m., according to the Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County web site. She was stabbed 11 times.

“Nothing was taken from Aliza,” the web site reports.

With the exception of security camera footage from a nearby building, there have not been any significant updates in the case since Sherman’s killing.

Yet Sherman’s friends and family are not allowing the search for her killer to fade into obscurity.

For 22 years, Mary Feuer was a close friend of Sherman, a mother of four. The two initially met when their children were young and playing at a park in Beachwood.

“We became friends instantly,” Feuer said.

The news of Sherman’s death shocked Feuer.

“I was devastated, in disbelief,” she said.

In response to Sherman’s killing, Feuer, along with other loved ones of the Cleveland Clinic nurse, organized the Justice for Aliza Sherman group.

“We’re a group of women, and some men … [who] came together to find ways to get justice for Aliza,” Feuer said.

With the assistance of Crime Stoppers, the group has raised a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

The Justice for Aliza group attempts to keep the case in the news and maintains a billboard, which is currently located at the corner of E. 14th St. and Carnegie Ave. in Cleveland. They are also distributing bumper stickers and bracelets with the Justice for Aliza group name inscribed on them.

A Justice for Aliza website, Facebook page and Twitter feed have been initiated as well.

“And, more than that, we’re trying to help keep the case in the news, hoping somebody will step forward with information, and they’ll do the right thing,” Feuer said.

However, the group is not solely focused on bringing awareness to Sherman’s case.

“We’ve also branched out to helping women learn self-defense and know how to protect themselves if they ever get into a [threatening] situation,” she said.

Since Sherman’s killing last year, Feuer said the group has held five events, including a self-defense class, a special celebration in honor of Sherman on her birthday, and a Mother’s Day walk in her memory, which was attended by 300 people.

The group will hold a ceremony in honor of Sherman on Mon., March 24, exactly one year after Sherman’s murder. The event will be held at the corner of E. 12th St. and Hamilton Ave. in Cleveland, near the location where Sherman was killed, beginning at 5:00 p.m., which, Feuer said, is approximately the time the killing occurred.

Representatives of the personal defense spray manufacturer Mace Brand are assisting the group with the one-year anniversary. Bottles of personal defense spray will be distributed to those in attendance.

“Mace has been very generous in donating,” Feuer said, adding they expect about 200 people will attend.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

“We’ll be remembering Aliza and also bringing awareness for women to learn how to protect themselves,” she said.

If there is a conviction in Sherman’s case, Feuer said the group will continue its operations.

“We will be doing events throughout the year on behalf of Aliza’s memory, … [along with] empowering women.”

Feuer said those interested in contacting the group regarding volunteer opportunities or donations can send an email to [email protected].

Anyone with information regarding Sherman’s killing is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463. According to Justice for Aliza, callers will remain anonymous.
